Shopping mall air quality

The mobility of contemporary society is a major stimulant in the evolution, spread and persistence of infectious diseases. A recent and highly relevant example of this is the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has changed public awareness in several ways. Before the pandemic, most people would only realise issues relating to outdoor air quality, such as smog. At present, indoor air quality and its possible negative health impacts have become a major concern for many.

Perhaps due to the strict government restrictions or general paranoia amongst the population, shopping malls in Hong Kong saw a tremendous decline in business during the peak of the pandemic. The installation of shopping mall air treatment units would help to combat the spread of infectious diseases and put wary people at ease, helping to restore business.

SARS-CoV-2 particles are known to range from 0.07 to 0.09 microns (μm), which is too small to be filtered out by current air purification technology. However, these virus particles are always bound to larger molecules, such as water droplets or aerosol particles, which can be removed by air purifiers. Upon laboratory testing, our NCCO air purifiers have been proven to be able to eliminate 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, also known as COVID-19.

Common reasons for deteriorating air quality in shopping malls

Besides the obvious cause of tremendous people flow in a single confined space, there are actually numerous other reasons contributing to poor shopping mall air quality.

1. Lack of ventilation/fresh air

In many shopping malls, especially those that have many floors, there are often no windows that open. This is usually due to an attempt to conserve air conditioning and also for the physical safety of consumers. Many shopping malls also tend to have lower floors built underground, which means a lack of fresh air. Both of these reasons, among others, leads to a lack of ventilation, meaning air pollutants will congregate with no where to disperse.

2. Release of harmful chemicals

One reason for the persistence of harmful chemicals in a shopping mall environment, is due to the release of harmful chemicals from various different sources. For example, cleaning supplies and solvents will increase levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Our shopping mall air treatment units

RHT Industries Ltd. produces many air purifiers that use our patented technology, Nano Confined Catalytic Oxidation, or NCCO, to decontaminate air. Among these NCCO air purifiers, are a plethora of different styles ranging from household and mini air purifiers, to machines designed for industrial use. Naturally, not all of these styles will be suitable for use as a shopping mall air treatment unit, however there are many styles that do meet the requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions about shopping mall air purification systems

1. Why should I be concerned about indoor air quality?

Most people are aware of the negative impact outdoor air pollution can have on health, but many do not know of the dangers of indoor air pollution, meaning if often goes by unnoticed. A survey regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) conducted by the World Green Organisation in Hong Kong in 2020, showed that most respondents (over 70%) were not familiar with many major indoor pollutants and their sources.

Studies of human exposure to air pollution by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States show that indoor levels of pollution are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels. This is particularly concerning as people almost always spend more time indoors than outdoors.

2. How exactly is NCCO technology able to improve shopping mall air quality?

NCCO, or Nano Confined Catalytic Oxidation, is a revolutionary technology which can perform high efficiency air purification. The core structure of this unique air treatment technology is an active oxygen generator and an NCCO reaction layer. The active oxygen released by the active oxygen generator can effectively kill bacteria and viruses, and at the same time can destroy the molecular structure of harmful chemicals. The reaction layer is composed of a large number of granular catalysts of artificial minerals. They contain nanotubes composed of transition metals, which can effectively lock pollutants and combine with the active oxygen to quickly and completely decompose harmful pollutants into harmless water and carbon dioxide.

Many tests have been conducted in order to test the ability of our NCCO air purifiers in removing pollutants like VOCs, proving that our technology has tremendous ability in decontaminating polluted air.
